Volunteers elevate hunger awareness by ‘Doing Something About It’ for United Way’s ‘Day of Doing: Let THEM Eat’

Food on the table may be “something” that many take for granted, yet local volunteers elevated hunger awareness Oct. 14 by stepping up to “Do Something About It” with United Way of the Big Bend (UWBB) for a DAY OF DOING called “Let THEM Eat.”

UWBB partnered with three of it’s certified agencies to offer opportunities for volunteers to provide food to those who are without this basic necessity.

“Times are tough for so many in our community,” said Heather Mitchell, UWBB vice-president of resource development. “Today’s and future DAYS OF DOING provide opportunities for folks to give back … not just with their wallets, but with their time. By participating in our DAYS OF DOING, volunteers are putting their care into action and working to ‘Do Something About It!’”

It didn’t take long for the volunteer spots to be filled. The Seminole Boosters Team assisted with mealtimes in the classrooms at Dick Howser Center for Childhood Services. Athletes from Florida State University served lunch at the Big Bend Homeless Coalition’s HOPE Community. Teams from Syn-Tech Fuel Systems and the Challenger Learning Center worked in the warehouse at America’s Second Harvest of the Big Bend.

“What a fantastic ‘Let THEM Eat’ event,” Mitchell said. “We are grateful to our partners who helped to make this a reality and our volunteers who made it work. UWBB’s DAYS OF DOING was created to promote the spirit and value of volunteerism, increase the awareness of local human-service needs, and demonstrate what people working together for the community’s good can accomplish. This is another illustration of the huge, positive impact we can make in our community when we LIVE UNITED.”

The DAYS OF DOING program provides opportunities for local residents to volunteer within an office, or with friends and family, to help those in need in our community. Being a part of this day of community service helps bring awareness to the needs of people in the Big Bend.
