Education is the cornerstone of individual and community success. When students don’t graduate, this hurts our community in lost wages, taxes and economic development. These trends are reversible, when we work together. United Way of the Big Bend has done just that by partnering with Leon County Schools on numerous literacy efforts around the county.
In November 2014, both Leon County Schools and United Way of the Big Bend were notified that each of their 2014-2015 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) Request for Proposals has been recommended for funding. The grant awarded to United Way of the Big Bend covers four Title I schools, Apalachee Tapestry Magnet School of the Arts, Hartsfield Elementary School, Riley Elementary School and Ruediger Elementary School. This is a $3 million grant over five years and is the largest United Way of the Big Bend has ever received. The proposal submission process was highly competitive, and it was noted that the quality of our proposal is a significant accomplishment. This funding will allow hundreds of students at these schools to receive free, highly enriching, after-school programs with a focus on literacy.
During the 21st CCLC Program students will have the opportunity gain literacy and social skills through programs, and activities, such as youth development activities, drug and violence prevention programs, counseling programs, art, music, dance, drama, health and recreation programs, technology education programs, certifications and character education programs.
The program is free of charge and snack or supper will be provided to the students. The program will begin on August 17, 2015 and ends through May 27, 2016. The 21st CCLC Program will follow the 2015-16 School District Calendar. School Sites will be open during Early Release Days and closed during the districts scheduled Holidays and Teacher Planning Days. More information about the Summer 21st CCLC Program will be coming soon!
